Honest comparison

Skin analysis app or dermatologist

These are not competing products, and pretending they are does everyone a disservice. One describes how skin looks in a photo. The other practises medicine. Here is which question belongs to which.

The short answer, first, because it matters

If anything about your skin worries you, see a dermatologist. Not after a scan, not after a week of tracking. Dermly gives cosmetic observations about appearance only. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose, it does not treat, and it is no substitute for a visit to a doctor. That limit is not fine print here; it is the point of this page.

Where the doctor wins, plainly

Almost everywhere that counts. A photograph loses depth, texture under the surface, colour fidelity and everything a hand can feel. It carries no history: no medication list, no family background, no account of what changed last month. And it cannot ask you a single follow up question. A dermatologist has all of that plus years of training, and can act on what they find. An app has a JPEG.

There is also a failure mode worth naming: an app that sounds confident can talk somebody out of an appointment they needed. That is the reason Dermly stays inside the cosmetic question and repeats the boundary on every screen rather than burying it in the terms.

Where an app is genuinely useful

  • Frequency. Nobody gets a professional opinion every Sunday. A weekly self scan is possible and free of scheduling.
  • A stable yardstick. Fixed scoring means the instrument does not drift, so a change across twelve weeks came from your skin.
  • Memory. A photo timeline plus seven numbers per week is a better record of a quarter than recollection is.
  • Following through. A checklist, a streak and an evening reminder move a routine from intention to habit, which is where most skincare actually fails.

Comparison questions

Can a skin analysis app replace a dermatologist?

No, and no honest app will claim otherwise. A dermatologist examines your skin physically, takes a history, can order tests and can prescribe. An app reads a photograph and describes how the surface looks. Those are different activities with different evidence behind them. Dermly is built for the cosmetic question only, and it says so on every screen.

When should I stop using an app and book an appointment?

Whenever something on your skin worries you. That includes anything that changes, anything that hurts or itches persistently, anything that bleeds, anything that will not heal, any sudden reaction, and anything you find yourself checking repeatedly. Do not spend a week scanning it. Book the appointment.

What is a skin analysis app actually good at?

Three things a clinic is not set up for. Frequency: you can scan weekly, which no appointment schedule allows. Consistency: the same photo always returns the same numbers, so week to week comparison is stable. Cost: it is free to download and needs no account. Within the cosmetic question it is a decent instrument, and outside it, it is nothing.

Is Dermly useful if I already see a dermatologist?

It can be, in a narrow way: a weekly photo timeline and a set of cosmetic scores taken under consistent conditions is a better record of the months between appointments than memory is. Bring it as a record, not as a second opinion, and let the doctor decide what it is worth.

Does Dermly diagnose anything?

No. It is not a medical device and it performs no diagnosis of any kind. It produces cosmetic and aesthetic observations about how skin looks in a photograph, plus general category level routine suggestions. Anything medical belongs with a qualified professional.
